Meet Lawrence!

“The beauty of the ocean and all it encapsulates can not be experienced entirely in one lifetime”

Lawrence Scheele is 26 year-old Marine Biologist & Underwater Photographer from Sydney, Australia. Since as long as he can remember, Lawrence has been fascinated with the ocean, in particular cephalopods (octopus, cuttlefish, squid & nautilus)

It was in 2013 when Lawrence picked up his first underwater camera during a family holiday to Lord Howe Island, and it was here where he fell in love with snorkeling and freediving, surrounded by the pristine marine life. Unlike most underwater photographers, Lawrences’ images are captured whilst freediving and not on scuba which allows him to get much closer to his subjects.
In 2014 Snorkeldownunder was born, an online social media platform that showcased Lawrences’ underwater photography and his pure love for the ocean. Snorkeldownunder was the building blocks for Lawrence's career. Since then Lawrences’ work has been featured internationally in places like National Geographic, The New York Times & Sky News.
In 2017 Lawrence embarked on his journey to Townsville to study Marine Biology at James Cook University. It is then when he discovered Townsville's hidden gem, Magnetic Island (Yunbenun). Making weekly camping trips to explore the island it “just made sense,” for Lawrence to move to Maggie so he could spend as much time in the water as possible exploring the fringing coral reefs.
Once on Maggie, it was brought to Lawrences attention that the marine life here is abundant and diverse which sparked the inspiration to work on his first book which he hopes to release in 2023.
Ultimately, Lawrences’ mission involves traveling Australia and around the world in search of cryptic marine species whilst bringing educational and conservational awareness to the lesser known creatures of the ocean.
